Must be the magic number: 61 walkers gathered again today to be inspired by Neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Schlitt as he talked about the health benefits of walking. He asked some true-or-false questions, the answers to which were sometimes surprising, but always encouraging. (We hope he’ll send a copy of them so we can post them here.)
Dr. Schlitt talked about his personal weight and walking history, and how he now urges his patients to walk as a way of nurturing their own healing (and as an adjunct to physical therapy). He generously provided his time and comments, but also free pedometers and water bottles to those in attendance.
The 2-mile walking route started at the Burien Community Center and formed a loop, north into the Chelsea Park neighborhood and back again to the Community Center. Walkers were encouraged to go at whatever pace and for whatever distance was just right for them. For some, that may have been a few blocks down and back. For others, long distance at a fast clip was feasible. The important message was, simply: “Walk.”

Thank you, Dr. Schlitt. As we each glance down at the pedometers at our waists, we’ll send out our gratitude to you for your friendly encouragement of a lifestyle that includes frequent walking.

We hope you’ll join WABI on the monthly Walk-n-Talks, always on the first Sunday of every month. Details of the walks are posted a few days beforehand on the WABI web site. We gather at 2:00 and start walking at 2:15, having varied conversations along the way. Come walk with us!
