Our Walk Tacoma series is back by popular demand! The North Waterfront to Theater District Walk this Friday, June 22 is the next in the Walk Tacoma 2012 series. Celebrate the summer solstice by getting out and enjoying the fresh air (we won’t promise sunshine…). No need to RSVP, just join us!

Walkers can choose between two free walks:
1) the “history walk” led by Reuben McKnight, Historic Preservation Officer with the City of Tacoma
2) a “power walk” led by Debrah Schneider with Fitness One. The 1.5 mile walk starts at noon. No RSVP needed.

Downtown on the Go and the American Heart Association partner on the walks with the shared goal of encouraging residents and employees to add walking to their daily routines. “Our joint goal is for residents and employees to add walking into their daily routine, whether it is at a lunch break, parking a little further away for added exercise, or walking to and from work,” said Kristina Walker, Downtown On the Go Manager.

Through this connection between Downtown On the Go and the American Heart AssociationDOTG hopes to get people to adopt an active lifestyle and for companies to encourage their employees to incorporate physical activity into their day. Walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. By walking as little as 30 minutes per day one can improve their circulation, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and promote weight loss, according to the AHA.
