Join the WABI Weekday Walkers on a transportation segment that is both old and new. Des Moines Memorial Drive, originally a memorial to WW1 dead, is also the location of Burien’s new segment of the Lake to Sound Trail. We’ll walk on Wednesday, October 17 at 9 am, meeting at the old Sunnydale Elementary School, at S 156th St and Des Moines Memorial Drive. The new segment is 1.5 miles to Normandy Road and mostly flat. We’ll walk to the end then turn around for an easy 3-mile walk.
Date: Wednesday, October 17, 2018 (always the third Wednesday of the month)
Time: Meet 5-10 minutes before 9:00 so we can start walking promptly at 9:00 am.
Meeting Place: Parking lot of Sunnydale Elementary School at the corner of S 156th St and Des Moines Memorial Drive.
Parking: There is a limited amount of parking at the Sunnydale parking lot. Park on the side facing S. 156th.

More on history: In 1921, the Seattle Garden Club President, Lillian McEwan, undertook the task of transforming a redbrick highway between Seattle and Des Moines, the High Line Road, into a “Living Road of Remembrance” lined with over 1000 trees to honor World War I dead. At the time, the road was a major connector between Seattle and Tacoma. Alas, the trees chosen to line the drive were elms, which over the years were decimated by Dutch elm disease and road maintenance.
