In September, the Des Moines Waterland Walking Group will do a two-trail walk. We’ll walk on the Barnes Creek trail and a Des Moines creek spur trail.
We’ll meet at 11:00 on Sunday, September 17, at the small parking lot at the Barnes Creek trail head. This lot is on 216th Street about a block towards the water from the post office. To find the parking lot, head towards the water on 216th from the post office and look for yellow crosswalk signs about a block ahead. There’s a left turn lane that goes into the parking lot as you are heading down 216th. The lot holds 6 or so cars, and I have never seen it full. If it is full, you can park in the post office lot and easily walk to the parking lot.
We’ll start our walk by walking on the Barnes Creek trail and then wander through the Steven J. Underwood Memorial Park and back to our starting point. The second half of the walk will take us a few blocks down 216th, where we’ll walk through a neighborhood and access a spur trail above the Des Moines Creek trail that will take us back to the parking lot.
This walk goes through forests with some uneven dirt trails and also on city streets and sidewalks. There are a couple of hills, but we’ll take them slowly! The walk is around 2 miles, maybe a bit over and will take an hour to an hour and a half. Dogs are welcome.
If you have any questions or need help finding us on the day of the walk, please call or text Anna at (206) 501-5726.
