The Tacoma News Tribune announced the roll-out of Tacoma’s Year of the Bike. Let’s support our neighbors to the south by hopping on two wheels for fun and errands.
Tacoma’s Year of the Bike starts Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Grand Cinema (Tacoma, 606 S. Fawcett Ave, Tacoma, WA 98402) with a movie and panel discussion about bicycle culture. The free screening of the documentary “ AfterMass: Bicycling in a Post-Critical Mass Portland” starts at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are available Thursday on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is sponsored by the Tacoma Wheelmen‘s Bicycle Club in honor of member and avid cyclist Anne Seago. Seago died in January.
Following the 74-minute film, director Joe Biel and cycling author Elly Blue will participate in a discussion. Downtown On The Go, the event organizer, has declared 2015 the Year of the Bike.
Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland recently signed a proclamation supporting DOTG’s effort to promote cycling in Tacoma.
In an email, DOTG coordinator Matt Newport explained the idea for the Year of the Bike: “… If we want to see more people biking to work or to school or to shops downtown, they first need to make some short bike trips, probably within their own neighborhood. Through a year-long poster campaign and outreach to local bicycle groups, clubs and supporters, we’re asking those who already ride around Tacoma to be Bicycle Ambassadors to the rest of the city.”
