Today was the month of May’s first Sunday and, therefore, a Walk-n-Talk day. And, oh, what a walking day it was! Sunny. Blue sky. Warm temp. Dry paths. And a group of faces that are more familiar every month. Twenty-one people showed up to start at an elevation of 398 feet, and descend to the waterfront of Seahurst Beach… then back up again to the top.
We started down the service road that goes to the Marine Science Center and met up at a trail crossing with Melessa and Janis from “Neighbors of Seahurst Park“. They gave us an overview of Westmark Development’s “Emerald Pointe” 200-unit condo project, which will likely have a big impact on the treasured trail we walked upon. Since they’ve been working so closely against the project, we wanted to hear their perspective, so up front and personal.
We continued down the road, flanked by nettles and piggyback plants, old growth and bracket fungi, and made our way to the beach. The shoreline was packed on this long-welcomed, warm, sunny day! We had a seaside break and were amused by the “mobiles” hanging from each lamp post, made of beach finds.
On the way up, we chose the meandering trails instead of the service road. It was steeper, narrower, rougher… and more beautiful in its roughness. The walkers got the sense of the ravine and the pathways available to them for future strolls.
Some walkers, though longtime local residents, had never seen these trails. How wonderful that now, they have!
