Oh! Everybody loves a secret pathway! Well…it’s not so secret for the neighbors that live in the area, but let’s explore and enjoy it together.
Date: Sunday, May 4, 2025 (Rain or shine…)
Time: Meet-up at 2:00. Walking starts at 2:15.
Place: Meet at the New Start Community Garden, aka the “Shark Garden”.
614 SW 120th St., Burien, WA 98146
Who: Open to all walkers, welcome to do all or part of the walk, and all may go at their own pace.
Route: (See the map below.) We’ll meet at the Shark Garden (there’s plenty of parking). Then we’ll proceed west on SW 120th St. until we get to 8th Ave. SW. From there, we head south on 8th until it looks like we can go no further… but we’ll walk alongside the lichen-covered vehicles, along the path through the underbrush! (You’d never know it’s there!) We come back out to the paved street for about 5 blocks, then more hidden pathway. We finally come back out of the brush and get to SW 132nd, where we head east, pass Hazel Valley Elementary, cross 4th Ave. SW and keep going to 2nd Ave. SW. We’ll turn north, wave hello to Mary and Joseph, head up to 130th, then west back to the 8th Ave. SW passageway, and retrace our steps back to the Shark Garden. There are a few short patches of sidewalks, and a few short sloping stretches, up and down. Total distance is 2.5 miles.
Once back at the Shark Garden, everyone’s encouraged to stroll through and admire the Community Garden plots to see what’s growing. And don’t forget to admire all the art created by students and installed on the fence along the road!
This route was revealed to me by a nearby resident and walk/bike advocate. There’s talk of “improving” this to encourage its use as a north-south route for walkers and cyclists (avoiding Ambaum and 4th Ave. SW).
This is a FREE event and is enjoyable for all, including friendly four-legged friends. Every month since August 2011, neighbors and Burien city visitors have gathered, walked and talked for fun, conversation and exercise. Come join the group! Chat with someone you wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to meet with. If you have a pedometer or other sort of step-counter, bring it along. Let’s see how many steps we can tally.
Check out our tip sheet: “Start Walking for Health and Well-Being”.
(Please click on the map for a larger view, then print it out if you’d like to bring it with you on the walk.)
Intentions for Burien’s Walk-n-Talk:
- “Encourage active living to support physical and mental health.” (Part of Burien’s “Vision”.)
- Initiate conversation between friends and neighbors, new and old.
