Pouring rain on a gray, ole day, 10 people and a pup showed up to go for a walk! Head-to-toe in rain gear, boots and even umbrellas (!), local folks didn’t let a little rain keep ’em inside, cozy by the fireplace. No! They brought their smiles, their conversation, their desire to stroll with neighbors, and they fearlessly, cheerfully, dove into the fluctuating rain storm all the way from Burien’s Town Square Park, over the freeway to Mathison Park.
Eric Mathison was in the group of intrepid walkers, and he chatted before and during the walk about his family history on that land, the highest point in the City of Burien. He talked about his Dad building the house, the 7 family members living in 1000 square feet, his Mom’s love for the trees (“the trees WERE the view?”) their garden and camps on the property, and their donation of the land to the City.
The gear-clad walkers were undaunted by the downpour, and gladly clambered down the winding trail on the clay-muck hillside. Down and around and back up to the top, we then headed over the freeway, back to town, past Dottie Harper Park to Town Square. We bid adieu ’til next month (and hope for dry skies then, but will walk rain or shine).
Come join us for the next Walk-n-Talk. It’s different every month. It’s always interesting and the conversation always varies.
