Hello walking enthusiasts of Burien and South Seattle!

I am Dane Nimako, MD, a family physician who has been practicing in South Seattle for the past 4 years, and I am starting a walking group through an international nonprofit organization called Walk with a Doc. This program was started in Ohio in 2005 and has expanded across the world since. Essentially, it provides clinicians and communities a chance to meet and talk about health outside the walls of a clinic or hospital, while also engaging in the healthy activity of walking.

At the start of each walk, a health care professional will speak for 5-7 minutes about a general health topic. For our first meeting on Saturday, September 16, we’ll be talking about Influenza and the Flu vaccine. We won’t be giving out the vaccine at the walk nor will I be trying to convince you to get it – I’ll leave that to your primary care clinic or local pharmacy. Instead, I’ll just run through some frequently asked questions I get about the Flu vaccine, and field any others you might have!

  • Date and Time: Saturday, September 16, 2023, 11:00 AM
  • Place: Burien Community Center UPPER parking lot. 14700 6th Ave SW, Burien, WA 98166.
  • Upcoming Walks: Walking on the 3rd Saturday of every month at 11:00 AM

According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions.

All ages are welcome, as are animal companions. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Walk at your own pace and distance.

I plan on organizing a walk every third Saturday of each month starting Saturday, September 16, meeting at the upper parking lot of the Burien Community Center (for the time being, location may change depending on accessibility).

In the future, I hope to recruit other health care professionals to come give talks as well. Don’t let the name fool you, Walk with a Doc is not for medical doctors only – we welcome licensed/certified healthcare workers from all fields to lead walks. In fact, one of my goals of this group is to see if it can help reduce burnout amongst healthcare professionals!
