Black History Month Walk-n-Talk Feb 7

We have a special Walk-n-Talk lined up for this Sunday, Feb. 7, in honor of Black History Month.

Black Lives Matter in American History Exhibit

Here in the City of Burien, we are fortunate to have a large exhibit displayed in 11 window fronts around town. The exhibit is based on a detailed timeline of Black History in America, researched and compiled by Nancy Salguero McKay, Director of the Highline Heritage Museum. The walking route starts at the Maverick Apartments (northwest corner), then continues at Merrill Gardens (south and east windows) and finishes at the Museum (north window).

This “Black Lives Matter in American History Exhibit” is comprised of photographs, the timeline spanning several centuries, statements, poetry, signage, cultural materials, sculpture and paintings, textiles and so much more. The exhibit runs from Feb. 5 – April 30.

Walk Details:

• Time/Date: Sunday Feb. 7, 2021. Meet at 2:00. Start walking at 2:15. (Rain or shine.)
• Place: Meet on top of the grassy knoll at Burien Town Square Park. 400 SW 152nd St.
• Who: Walkers of every level and ability, including friendly, four-legged friends.
• Route: We will begin at Town Square Park, walk to The Maverick Apartments, continue to Merrill Gardens, then to Olde Burien and the Highline Heritage Museum, then return to Town Square. (See the map below.)
• This walk, at about 1 mile, will be shorter in distance than our usual walks. We will linger at each of the 3 exhibit stations for about 15 minutes, allowing everyone to have some time to read the exhibit materials. The walks usually finish by about 3:30.
• MASKS ARE REQUIRED and we will follow social-distancing guidelines.

Suggestions:

• Cell Phone for reading several QR codes embedded in the exhibit.
• Umbrella, just in case.
