Advocates for Bike and Pedestrian Programs Go to Washington D.C.
The annual National Bike Summit convened in Washington, DC last week. Summit participants met with members of Congress and were addressed by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and leaders of the Congressional Bike Caucus. A focal point for biking and walking advocates is a provision in the Senate bill that establishes a competitive federal grant program for state and local programs that support active transportation. The current Transportation Enhancements Program has provided $8.7 billion to state and localities for such purposes since its inception in 1992.
