Hope you’re staying warm and still getting outside midday to get some sun exposure! Even though the sun is not clearly out, the daylight is still vital to regulating our Circadian Rhythm. I’ll be talking more about sleep medicine for our next walk, which will be this Saturday, December 14th, a week early to avoid holiday travel. Same time and place though. If I don’t see you there, I’ll be wishing you a healthy and happy holiday season!
Oh and just a reminder, Walk With a Doc has partnered with a program called Grouper that works with many Medicare Advantage insurance plans to pay their members stipends of up to $50 to participate in activities like our walks. About Walk with a Doc
According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions.
Walk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from a healthcare professional, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out, get active, and learn about health from a trained professional, instead of the internet.
The South Seattle chapter is run by local family physician Dane Nimako, MD. You can find him practicing at a few different organizations around Seattle, but he runs the chapter independently as a way of bringing health education outside clinic walls.
The Walk with a Doc program was started in Columbus, OH in April of 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir and has now expanded throughout the world. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Walk at your own pace and distance.
Walk with a Doc is a separate organization and not affiliated with Walk/Bike Burien (aka “WABI”), but WABI loves to promote walking and is happy to let folks in the south end know about other walking opportunities in the area.
