After a season full of holiday celebrations and the start of a new year, you may have vowed to “get back on that exercise program!” Do your New Year’s resolutions include goals like “lose weight” and “get in shape”? It’s the time of year when we come off our holiday sugar highs and recommit to our own health and wellbeing. Do you wonder how to begin? A gym membership is great, but the answer may be much simpler than that: Walk More.
On Sunday, January 3, 2016, WABI will host the 4th Annual Walk-n-Talk-with-a-Doc. We’ll have a new speaker this year: Ms. Tawnia McKenzie, RN. Ms. McKenzie is the Stroke Program Coordinator at Highline Medical Center/CHI Franciscan Health. Tawnia will talk to us about:
- Walking, cycling and other exercise as a path to overall health and well-being
- Walking for stroke prevention and recovery
After Ms. McKenzie’s talk, we will leave the meeting room at the library and head west for a walk along SW 152nd, around Lake Burien and back to the library. The Walk-n-Talk-with-a-Doc has been a very well-attended event in past years, with more than 60 people listening to the presentation and then joining the community walk. This is a FREE event, and walkers of all ages are encouraged to participate. (You may also come solely for the presentation if you’re unable to join the walk.)
Date: Sunday, January 3, 2016 (Rain or shine, though SUNSHINE is in the forecast.)
Time: Meet at 2:00. Introduction and talk by Tawnia McKenzie, RN, starts at 2:15.
Walking starts at about 2:30/2:45 or so. (Time will vary depending on Q&A after Ms. McKenzie’s talk.)
Place: Meet in the multipurpose room (city council chambers behind the glass wall) on the first floor of the Burien City Hall/Public Library. 400 SW 152nd St.
Who: Walkers of every age, level and ability
(dogs are welcome)
Distance: About 2.25 miles, round trip, mostly flat, with some sidewalks. Walkers are welcome to walk any portion of the route, short or long, depending on their abilities, and walk at any pace that is most comfortable for them.
Route: From Burien City Hall/Public Library at Burien Town Square, west around Lake Burien, and back to Town Square Park.(See map below.)
As an added bonus, Phoenix Tea, in Olde Burien, welcomes the Walk-n-Talkers into their shop for a sip of hot tea, whether heading westbound at the beginning of the walk, or eastbound at the end. 902 SW 152nd Street, Burien, WA 98166
